Commercial appliances and equipment

WP5a was a market research study into the variety of commercial appliances and the issues to be addressed in their conversion or replacement with hydrogen appliances. This study has been carried out by Environmental Resources Management (ERM).

WP5b was a competition for the development of hydrogen commercial appliances such as catering equipment and boiler cascade systems. A number of suppliers were appointed and worked on the development of commercial appliances.

19 October 2021, WP5B Appliance developer leaflets

  • Worcester Bosch’s HyLife boiler cascade system provides a hydrogen-ready solution for commercial heating applications up to 512 kW

  • HyCatering has produced a range of five certified, hydrogen gas catering appliances comprising a hydrogen gas grill, griddle, chargrill, open top range, and a fryer

  • HyRad has produced a hydrogen fired radiant tube heater

  • HyAir has produce air heaters and cabinet heaters suitable for use with hydrogen gas.

4 NOVEMBER 2020, UNDERSTANDING COMMERCIAL APPLIANCES REPORT PUBLISHED

Environmental Resources Management has conducted a market research study (work package 5a) into the variety of commercial appliances and the issues to be addressed in their conversion or replacement with hydrogen appliances: Understanding Commercial Appliances.

REMOTE MILESTONE REVIEW GUIDANCE NOTE

We’ve published the remote milestone review guidance that we’ve issued to manufacturers appointed to deliver appliances, components and meters. Remote review provides the option to verify milestone delivery without requiring physical site visits.

18 NOVEMBER 2019, CONTRACTS BEGIN FOR COMMERCIAL APPLIANCE DEVELOPMENT (WP5B)

BEIS has appointed contractors to develop commercial hydrogen appliances, boiler systems and ancillary system components under a SBRI competition as part of the Hy4Heat programme. Contracts have been awarded to Bosch Thermotechnology Ltd, Enertek International and SOLIDpower S.p.A.

27 september 2019, The wp5B sbri competition is now closed

The deadline for submissions has now passed and bids are currently being assessed. Once scoring is complete, suppliers will be notified of the results and the projects are expected to commence in November 2019

19 September 2019, Revised ITT and Third set of clarification questions published

A final set of clarification questions raised about the WP5b ITT has now been published. The ITT has been re-issued with milestone 6 amended (on pages 15, 34, 45 and 46) to specify only one fully boxed appliance to be delivered for Lot 3A: Burner integrated with a shell boiler (>400 kW) and Lot 4: Combined Heat and Power. This is the only change made to the ITT under Revision C. The submission deadline remains 27/09/19.

5 September 2019, Revised ITT and SECOND SET oF clarification questions reissued

The ITT has been reissued with the deadline for receiving bids having been extended to 27 September 2019 (on pages 2, 7, 19 and 20) and the deadline for receipt of milestone 1 submissions, for appliance development, being extended to 10 February 2020 (on pages 14, 27 and 29). These are the only changes which have been made to the ITT. The second set of clarification questions have also been reissued with the answer provided for Q35 having been revised.

21 May 2019, WP5 COMMERCIAL APPLIANCE ENGAGEMENT EVENT - PRESENTATION

An engagement event was held on Tuesday 21 May, 2019 at BEIS Conference Centre. The session brought together commercial manufacturers and also other interested parties to discuss the Hy4Heat work package 5 which will develop commercial hydrogen gas appliances.

Environmental Resources Management has been appointed to produce a research report on the feasibility of converting commercial sector appliances from natural gas to hydrogen.

26 July 2018, Understanding commercial and industrial appliances (WP5&6) ITT published

BEIS intends to appoint a contractor(s) to deliver comprehensive research reports on the feasibility of converting commercial sector appliances (Lot 1) and industrial heat generation (Lot 2) from natural gas to hydrogen. This will require full characterisation of the market and identification of any knowledge gaps and barriers to conversion that may need to be addressed. They will inform consideration of whether further evidence, potentially in the form of practical testing, will be required to demonstrate that these sectors can be successfully converted as part of demonstrating and de-risking the use of hydrogen for heat in UK homes and businesses.

25 May 2018, Prior information notice (PIN) published for understanding commercial and industrial appliances (WP5&6)
